Tigray Teachers & Leaders Healing & Development (TTLHD) Project
The Tigray Teachers & Leaders Healing & Development (TTLHD) Project, implemented by Emmanuel Development Association (EDA) in partnership with Woord en Daad and the Tigray Education Bureau, aims to support the recovery of the education system in conflict-affected Tigray. The project addresses the urgent needs of teachers, educational leaders, administrative staff, and students who have experienced trauma due to the war, with activities focusing on healing, psychosocial support, trauma-informed teaching, instructional leadership, and capacity building to restore safe, supportive, and effective learning environments.
During the reporting period, key capacity-building activities were conducted, including a five-day MHPSS and GBV training for college administrative staff and a five-day refresher training for primary school supervisors across seven zones on instructional leadership and digital tools. A three-day Structured Pedagogy and Activity-Based Learning training was delivered to CTE instructors to enhance learner-centered teaching and reflective practice. A 72-page MHPSS and GBV training package was developed and validated for contextual relevance.
Impact and reach highlights include training 262 administrative staff (98% of target), with 148 female participants (56.5%), and 256 primary school supervisors (97% attendance). The project has strengthened institutional collaboration between EDA, the Regional Education Bureau, and colleges of teacher education, established a foundation for trauma-informed, gender-responsive education across Tigray, and generated high participant satisfaction and commitment to cascade training knowledge for broader regional impact on education quality.
Key Activities & Deliverables
Institutional Training & Capacity Building
- Administrative Training: Delivered a 5-day Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) training to 262 college administrative staff (achieving 98% of the target, with 56.5% female participation).
- Supervisory Coaching: Conducted a 5-day refresher training for 256 primary school supervisors (representing 97% attendance) across seven zones, focusing on instructional leadership and digital tools.
- Pedagogical Enrichment: Provided a 3-day Structured Pedagogy and Activity-Based Learning training to Colleges of Teacher Education (CTE) instructors to enhance learner-centered, reflective teaching practices.
Curriculum Development & Validation
- Contextualized Resources: Developed and validated a comprehensive, 72-page MHPSS and GBV training package designed specifically for contextual relevance in conflict-affected environments.
Strategic Collaboration & Regional Impact
- System Integration: Strengthened cross-institutional collaboration between EDA, the Tigray Regional Education Bureau, and local colleges of teacher education.
