Integrated Response to Drought-Affected Communities
With funding from UN-OCHA-EHF, Emmanuel Development Association (EDA) is implementing an integrated drought response project to restore food security and build resilience for 11,320 beneficiaries in Bugna Woreda. Key agricultural activities include the distribution of 27,850 kg of improved wheat seeds to 743 households and 750 kg of teff seeds to 150 households, covering 223.25 hectares; provision of 800 watering cans for irrigation; and agronomic training for 893 farmers, improving crop yields to 2.5–4 quintals of wheat and 1.5–2 quintals of teff per 0.25 hectares.
Veterinary services reached 9,179 farmers owning 61,922 livestock including cattle and shoats, preventing disease outbreaks and generating an estimated ETB 646 million in income for affected households. Accountability committees were established, gender mainstreaming was promoted across all activities, and PSEA compliance was ensured throughout the project lifecycle.
Through the integration of agricultural support, irrigation, livestock health services, and community accountability mechanisms, the project is mitigating the effects of drought and empowering vulnerable communities in Bugna Woreda to rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen long-term resilience in the face of recurring climate shocks.
Key Activities & Deliverables
Crop Production & Agronomic Support
- Improved Seed Distribution: Distributed 27,850 kg of improved wheat seeds to 743 households and 750 kg of teff seeds to 150 households, covering a total area of 223.25 hectares.
- Yield Optimization: Delivered agronomic training to 893 farmers, driving up agricultural productivity to 2.5–4 quintals of wheat and 1.5–2 quintals of teff per 0.25 hectares.
- Irrigation Tools: Provided 800 watering cans to smallholders to enhance vegetable and crop cultivation under drought conditions.
Livestock Protection & Economic Value
- Veterinary Services: Reached 9,179 farmers, protecting 61,922 livestock (including cattle, sheep, and goats) from disease outbreaks.
- Income Generation: Secured an estimated ETB 646 million in economic value and household income for drought-affected families by safeguarding their core livestock assets.
Accountability & Inclusion
- Community Protection: Established local accountability committees and enforced strict Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Gender Mainstreaming: Promoted equitable gender representation and participation across all agricultural and veterinary interventions to reach a total of 11,320 beneficiaries.
