Family Helper Project
With support from Children Believe, Emmanuel Development Association (EDA) implemented the Family Helper Project (FY 2024) to improve education, health, and economic opportunities for 2,352 vulnerable individuals in Akaki Kality Sub-city. The project delivered integrated support across education, health, economic empowerment, and child protection, targeting sponsored children, their families, and the broader community.
Key achievements include providing scholastic materials to 784 sponsored children; supplying teaching and play materials to six ECCD and primary schools; training 122 teachers on inclusive education for special needs children; offering vocational training to 42 youth; training 20 mothers in business skills with ETB 250,000 in seed money; improving nutrition for 234 community members; and conducting health assessments for 681 children with health facilities equipped with ETB 579,000 worth of medicines.
The project also trained 214 community leaders on child rights, strengthened a special needs center with essential materials, provided wheelchairs to three children with disabilities, and trained 60 female community members on positive parenting. Through these integrated interventions, the project significantly improved access to quality education, health services, economic empowerment, and child protection for vulnerable families in Akaki Kality.
Key Activities & Deliverables
Inclusive Education & Youth Capacity Building
- Academic Resource Support: Provided essential scholastic materials to 784 sponsored children and delivered core teaching and play materials to six Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) and primary schools.
- Special Needs & Inclusive Training: Trained 122 teachers on inclusive education strategies to better support special needs children, alongside equipping a specialized needs center with vital learning materials.
- Vocational Pathways: Delivered targeted technical and vocational training to 42 local youth to boost employment readiness.
Socio-Economic Empowerment & Livelihoods
- Seed Capital for Mothers: Trained 20 mothers in business management and financial literacy, backing them with a collective ETB 250,000 in seed money to launch small enterprises.
- Nutritional Interventions: Improved nutritional intake and dietary practices for 234 vulnerable community members.
Community Health & Medical Care
- Child Health Screenings: Conducted comprehensive health assessments for 681 children.
- Medical Supply Provision: Equipped local public health facilities with ETB 579,000 worth of essential medicines to improve general care delivery.
- Mobility Support: Provided custom wheelchairs to three children living with physical disabilities to enhance their independence.
Child Protection & Positive Advocacy
- Rights Training: Trained 214 community leaders on child rights protection frameworks and local enforcement mechanisms.
- Parental Support: Guided 60 female community members through positive parenting workshops to cultivate safer, more supportive home environments.
- Mobility Support: Provided custom wheelchairs to three children living with physical disabilities to enhance their independence.
