Child Education and Protection

 

  • Strengthening early childhood development and social services: In collaboration with local community leaders, EDA has established and supported early childhood development (ECD) centers serving hundreds of children who are among the poorest of the poor in their communities.
  • Promoting quality primary education: EDA focuses on the provision of quality primary school education for target children by enhancing their level of performance in reading and the sciences by using demonstration to teach.
  • Providing supplementary school materials and educational opportunities: EDA has been providing educational materials support and tutorial education for target children. We also organize academic competitions among schools to foster academic competence and teamwork, allowing children to unleash their talent.
  • Promoting adult education and basic life skills: As per the national standards of adult education set by the government, EDA has organized poor target women into a Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) project which fosters the following components for the betterment of their lives:

     i) Health (Sexual & Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS & Malaria, Personal Hygiene & Environmental Sanitation, Nutrition)

    ii) Environmental Conservation & Protection

    iii) Urban Agriculture (Poultry Development & Horticulture)

    iv) Entrepreneurship

     v) Gender Relations

  • Capacity building of formal schools: This includes construction of schools, capacity building of teachers, and promoting and supporting girls’ education. In this regard, EDA has supported a number of select schools in its target areas.
  • Supporting children vulnerable to abuse, harm and exploitation: Many children from the poorest families are exposed to various problems of abuse and exploitation while living in their families and communities. This is mostly attributed to factors such as the lack of access to formal schools, low income, large family size, lack of awareness about child protection issues, and traditional customs and practices. These factors may hinder child growth and development. EDA has been systematically addressing such problems with pertinent stakeholders in the form of our multi-stakeholder approach.what we do education protection 2
  • Influencing community opinions and practices towards children by raising public awareness: Communities and families have a traditional way of handling children’s issues. This often has a detrimental effect on the growth and development of the child. Thus, equipping families and communities with appropriate information and training has been an important step towards empowering children and families in the endeavor of child protection. The common tools we use to influence the community’s attitude and practices include conducting community conversations and dialogues, providing parenting skills training, and promoting informational materials. As a result of the awareness raising schemes in various program components, people’s attitudes and community practices have changed, thereby creating a more child friendly environment.
  • Supporting orphans and other highly vulnerable children: EDA supports orphans with a wide range of services which encompass education, health, psychosocial support, food and nutrition, shelter, child protection and care, and economic support. In effect, this has helped to create family centered care and protection for highly vulnerable and orphaned children.
  • Protecting and preventing children from risky movement in the Addis Ababa and Amhara regions: This project is unique in its kind and approach, and has been implemented with the lead coordination of EDA and four other like-minded indigenous non-governmental partners to address the protection needs of children facing risky movement in the Amhara region. We also work together with the community to promote child protection in the Addis Ababa region.
